Principles of Pilates...
"A few well designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy callisthenics or forced contortion." - Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates based his body conditioning system on six principles.
Control
Controlling your movement so it is strong and free from tension or strain to produce a precise movement.
Concentration
Focusing your mind and make each movement a considered one.
Centre
According to Joseph Pilates, the "powerhouse" is the centre of the body and when strengthened it offers a solid foundation for any movement. Physically, the powerhouse include your abdominals (upper and lower), low back, buttocks, and inner-thigh muscles – these provide strength for your movement.
Precision
Moving with precision works the muscles correctly without strain or tension. Correctly aligning your body, balances your muscles.
Breath
Oxygen is vital for correct working of muscles; focusing on the breath ensures they are fully oxygenated during a movement. In Pilates, lateral breathing encourages a deeper inhalation.
Flowing Movement
Each exercise is created to flow seamlessly into the next, with no wasted movement in transition allowing continuous, fluid movement. This ensures a full-body workout that keeps up the heart rate and builds stamina and endurance.
